COPELAND Family History
This surname is of Old Norse origin, and is a locational name from Copeland in Cumberland, or Coupland in Northumberland, both so called from the Old Norse "kaupland" meaning "bought land", a feature worthy of note during the early Middle Ages, when land was rarely sold, but held by feudal tenure and handed down from one generation to the next. The placenames are recorded as "Couplanda" (1125) in the Register of the Priory of St. Bees, and as "Coupland" (1242) in the Book of Fees, respectively. During the Middle Ages when it was increasingly common for people to migrate from their birthplace to seek work further afield, the custom developed that they would adopt the placename as a means of identification...Select Audience

I was born in New Jersey, my father Peter Copeland and his father Peter Copeland I believe also were born in New Jersey.
Investigating, I found the name originated from fairy northern England, almost into Scotland, then later they migrated to Ireland, so my grandfathers family likely is from Ireland.
I live in California now, I like the weather but not much else about it.

Lynn Copeland
Hello, my name is Linh Marie Copeland.
My father was Peter Michael Copeland, his father Patrick Copeland. Patrick and his brothers I believe Tommy and John Copeland settled in Northern New Jersey.
Investigating the name I see it originated in very northern part of England pretty much on the border of Scotland, then she was they migrated to Ireland.
I thought my dad was Irish until I investigated.
Frankly my dad became a realtor in far Hills New Jersey, when I found out the name โCopelandโ meant โbought landโ, hi procured the family crest with information, framed it and he put it in his office, I now have it since sadly he is gone, my best friend, my rock.
Iโve been living in California for the past about 39 years.
I like the weather but I am a โJersey Girl โat heart
Donโt know if youโll read this but my email is Godndogs@aol.com
Sincerely,
Lynn Marie Copeland

Our name when I was single was Copland from Peterhead in Scotland. We are from the Scandinavian side yet my sister has Irish Colouring. Copland is from Copeland, Copland, Copland etc, all from same clan. I had my DNA done and I am 65% Scots and 35% Scandinavia to Nova Scotia. So our family travelled to the Americaโs I reckon.
James Copeland
I believe we had a Copeland...( older generation ...move to Texas, back in the early 20th century. Most of the Copelands in our family lived in the Midwest: Iowa and Illinois starting in the late 1800's. If I am not mistaken, his name might have been Wayne Copeland. I've traced some of the ancestors back to Indiana, Ohio, and then to New England.

Iโm not sure how old your post is, but I have a bit of information about my line of Copelands who came over from Ireland. The name is originally from Northumberland which fell either in England or Scotland depending upon the year. Copelands migrated to Ireland when England took over in the 1600โs. My ancestor, Alexander Copeland was born in Ireland in 1754 and later migrated to Spartanburg, SC. Our family has been in Atlanta, GA for at least 5 generations now.

Looking for any Copelands in Central Texas. Also anyone interested in talking with anyone in Ireland who might be able to provide some more information. Everything I have points to English roots but I want to check in to any Irish background as well
