O'GORMAN Family History
This interesting surname has two distinct possible origins one English, the other Irish. From England the surname is believed to be a patronymic of the pre Middle English male given name 'Gormund', itself deriving from the Old English pre 7th Century "Garmund". This was composed of the elements "gar", meaning a spear and "mund", meaning protection. This type of compound was very popular in England in those early times. The second origin is Irish, and to have originated as Mac Gormain, which translates as 'The son of the son of Blue'. Quite why anybody should be called 'blue' is unclear, unless it be a reference to the wearing of wode, which was blue...Select Audience

Hello all. I'm looking for information on the parent of John Purcell O'Gorman. He was born in Ireland in 1810 and died in Tennessee in 1863. He is my 4th great grandfather and I have been unable to find any information. Thanks in advance.

My mum was adopted after her birth in London 1956. We have recently discovered that my biological grandfather was John O'Gorman who emigrated to North America in 1955. My biological grandmother passed before we could learn more.
We are reaching out incase anyone may know any information. The last known location for John is an address in New York in 1956.
We know John may have hanged the spelling of his surname over time. Or has passed away.
